Appraisal is the most common word which is used is in every organization which motivates or helps the employees in upgrading their skills and improving their performance. In simple words, appraisal means it is an exact of examining someone or something in order to judge their performance, qualities, success etc., In every organization we have the performance appraisal. Performance appraisal is conducted to check the systematic evaluation of the performance of all the employees and also to understand the abilities of a person for his/her further growth and development in the organization. The performance appraisal helps us in learning about our draw backs and how to overcome them so that we can give our better performance in future.
It is advisable to go for your self-appraisal from time to time so that you can check for yourself as how to work on certain areas and show improvement in your performance. The self-appraisal can be done by maintaining a track of record of our works. You may set your own goals and try to achieve them on regular basis. Once you follow this way then you would become confident on your performance and you get good appreciation during your performance appraisal.
I recently came across a story which would suit my concept so I am sharing that story with you now my friends.
A Little boy went to a telephone booth which was at the cash counter of a store and dialled a number. The store-owner liked the boy as he seems to be joyful and wished him with a good smile. The store-owner observed and listened to the conversation of the boy:
Boy: “Madam, can you give me the job of cutting your lawn?”
Woman: (at the other end of the phone line) I am sorry, “I already have someone to cut my lawn.”
Boy: “Madam, I will cut your lawn for half the price than the person who cuts your lawn now, please give me a chance.”
Woman: “I’m very satisfied with the person who is presently cutting the lawn. So, I don’t want anybody in his place now.”
Boy: (with more perseverance) “Madam, I’ll even sweep the floor and the stairs of your house for free, please consider my request.”
Woman: “No, thank you.”
With a smile on his face, the little boy put the receiver down. The store-owner, who was listening to all this, walked over to the boy and spoke to him this way,
Store-owner: “Son….I like your attitude; I like that positive spirit and would like to offer you a job with the same salary you asked the lady over the phone to pay you.”
Boy: “No, thank you sir.”
Store-owner: “But you were really pleading for the job.”
Boy: “No Sir, I was just checking my performance at the job I already have. I am the one who is working for that lady I was talking to!”
This is called “Self-Appraisal”.
So, friends let us not wait till someone does the evaluation of our work but let us do it by ourselves and grow in our career.
As a beautiful quote says, “Nothing depends on luck, everything depends on work because, and even luck has to work.”
